There are many different theaters around Cannes, which during the film festival, become the theaters used for screenings. Some movie theaters around town show the films from the festival so Cannes residents can view them, and there's one pretty special theater called Cinéma de la Plage, which is the movie theater on the beach.
Located on the beach across from the Majestic Hotel is the Cinéma de la Plage. It's pretty easy to spot by the giant screen in front of the water at the shore. This theater, unlike some of the others associated with the festival, is open to the public.
Each night you can find people who have film festival badges lining up on the sidewalk next to the beach to try and score a chair provided by the festival. Those who make it to the chairs are also provided with a blanket for the screening, as Cannes does get fairly chilly at night.
You can also find members of the public setting up picnics on the sand or huddling together before the movie begins, as the general seating is just the sand of the beach.
This theater shows old, classic films, such as the one I saw last night, The Terminator. Cinéma de la Plage is a fun and free experience open to anyone in Cannes right now, and it's definitely worth it!
