Young filmmakers from across the U.S. and around the world will bring their shorts to The American Pavilion during the Cannes Film Festival The American Pavilion proudly announced its 2016 lineup for the Cannes American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase. The impressive program features 23 short documentary and narrative films by up-and-coming filmmakers from the U.S. and around the world, all of which will screen at The American Pavilion during the Cannes Film Festival. One of the films, DAY ONE by filmmaker Henry Hughes, went on to be nominated for the 2015 Academy Awards. The films this year focus on themes as diverse as racism, immigration, domestic abuse, orphans, and the history of New Orleans Sazerac. A variety of stars are featured this year, including: Abraham Attah (BEASTS OF NO NATION), Beck Bennett (Saturday Night Live), John Ainsworth (Glee), Missi Pyle (Gone Girl), and Shawn Ryan (Bones). The Showcase has thirteen titles directed by women, more than ever before, and will once again have a special section to highlight LGBTQ films. Student filmmakers hail from schools across the United States, including: School of Visual Arts, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Santa Monica City College, Santa Barbara City College, Chapman University, Santa Fe University of Art & Design, University of Alabama, and Sheridan College. “We received many great films and had the difficult task of narrowing the selection down to 23 films for this year’s showcase,” said Monika Skerbelis, Programming Director. “I'm particularly excited that we had submissions from so many female filmmakers, foreign filmmakers, and that we are including for a second year a sidebar showcasing LGBTQ films.” Emerging showcase winners will be chosen by a jury that includes agents, managers, producers and festival programmers and will be announced at The American Pavilion during this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
