"Toni Kalem’s beautifully layered adaptation of Lisa Zeidner’s acclaimed book is a provocative blend of humor and heartbreak. With the addition of the incomparable Penelope Cruz to our team, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase such strong female talent both in front of and behind the camera,” said producer Tatiana Kelly.

“We are looking forward to working with the outstanding Penelope Cruz on this film both on screen and behind the scenes,” said de Barros. “Toni is the perfect match to direct this project and bring a strong woman’s perspective to this personal and enthralling story of escape and self-discovery.”

Toni Kalem has an extensive background as an actress in film, television, and theatre. She starred as Angie Bonpensiero on the HBO hit series THE SOPRANOS. SYNOPSIS: LONG VERSION

Spectacular and unique images that moved the world of shadows to the glow of lights. Sequences that have a sense of history of humanity vibrating in the sigh and desire, in search of a wider reality, in search of a answers deeper inside the human being. A film without dialogues, where the acoustic live music and studio recordings and experimental music, the piano and vocals, merge with the images, in a powerful and indissoluble form.

According to the script, the initial action takes place in ancient times, where a priestess, called Sibylla, accesses inside an old temple, a scared enclosure, a prohibited and dangerous place, located in the heart of a mountain, beyond the tunnel of death . Then , Sibylla enters the enclosure, in order to call forward the unseen powers of light, in a time where the shadows constrain the crystal grid of awareness of the planet.

After the central sequence of the film, Enoc the Resplendent - the Archangel, manifests himself through a voice and a Stargate, and so Enoc, makes a unique release.

This Enoc's communication operates, where ever the viewer wanted, the transmutation, if expected. The rainbow light as a gift of the encounter and the Energy, felt. The pure love.

The final action takes place in the XXI Century, playing piano and feeling the Earth's new breath.

The screener is available online at Cinando.

Lucky and the Pirates Hits La Croisette

A Talking dog, a boy genius and some cranky pirates are set to make a splash when Lucky and the Pirates drops anchor at the Cannes Animation Day on May 18.

New York-based Director Karen Goldfarb says the film was intended as a Valentine for her dog Lucky – and because he once told her he wanted To Be a Star.
Set in ancient Shanghai, the film tells the tale of a plucky Shih Tzu who must fend for himself after his mistress Chi-Yu is kidnapped from her castle. Along the way, he meets Leo, a lost boy living on the streets. Together they stow away on a pirate ship in search of adventure and his lost love.

Goldfarb’s first film: “Here’s Lookin’ at You, Kid” a short spoof of Casablanca which starred Mark Vincent, Kevin Winebold, Mary Sprague, Adam Ginsberg and Johnny Jackpot – was shown at Cannes’ Short Film Corner in 2014 and won an Award of Merit at the Best Shorts Contest in 2015.

This film also features the same cast, with Mark Vincent as the voice of Capt. Krikey, Kevin Winebold as Lucky, Mary Sprague as Chi-Yu, Adam Ginsberg as  Smythe, and Johnny Jackpot as Smidget. It also introduces a new star: Orion Shi Maldonado, who is the voice of Leo, Boy Genius!

Jacque Temple and Majdhi Alghader round out the cast as Liang and the Merchant.

Winebold also wrote the film’s original music: “Lonely Pirate Song.” It’s visuals were created by Josh Pinker and Michael  Ventura.

Director’s Statement
“The Chinese have an old saying: "It's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.’ My translation: The world may be going to Hell in a Hand Basket -- but is it so terrible to want to bring a bit of laughter, color and joy to the equation? That's what I hope to do with this film. And if it says something about redemption of lost souls and how to fight a bully – even better.”
Goldfarb said she is working on a sequel: “The Promise: The Search for Chi-Yu” as well as a documentary about Holocaust survivor Helena Weinrauch: “Helena am Liben/Helena Alive.”

IM GLOBAL to Finance and Handle Global Sales for First-Ever Feature-Length Documentary on Music Legend CLIVE DAVIS

Cutting-edge indie entertainment studio IM Global, a subsidiary of Indian conglomerate Reliance ADA, announced today an agreement to fully finance and handle worldwide sales for CLIVE DAVIS: THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES - a feature-length documentary chronicling the life and historic creative influence of Clive Davis who is widely considered to be modern history’s most important music man.  The announcement was made by IM Global Founder and CEO Stuart Ford and IM Global Music President David Schulhof.    WME Global will sell domestic distribution rights to the film.

CLIVE DAVIS: THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES, based on Davis’ 2013 autobiography, The Soundtrack of My Life– which spent 10 weeks atop the New York Times Bestseller List -- will be directed by acclaimed documentary director and editor Chris Perkel (co-director The Town That Was, editor Pearl Jam 20) and produced by Scott Free Productions’ Michael Bernstein with Ridley Scott and Mary Lisio as executive producers.    Ford and Schulhof will also serve as executive producers.

The film is a fascinating story of courage, resilience, talent and an unwavering commitment to excellence.  These qualities drove Davis - a child of early 20th Century working-class Brooklyn who lost both parents while a teenager - to full academic scholarships to NYU and Harvard Law School and a brief but impactful stint as a white-shoe lawyer.  His unrelenting drive to be the best, a twist of fate and the discovery that he had “Golden Ears” for hit music, led Davis to assume the presidency of Columbia Records at just 35 years of age, discover Janis Joplin at the Monterey Pop Festival shortly thereafter and command a career that has created the soundtrack for three generations of American culture.

"Clive Davis’ journey in music defines the last 50 years of contemporary music like no one else,” said Ford and Schulhof.  “His compelling story is told through never-before-seen archival footage and Chris’ amazing and insightful interviews with the most culture-defining artists of our lifetime.  Chris finds the soul of the man who masters his gift, reconciles business and music and leaves his mark on the world many times over.  It is truly an inspiring journey and one loaded with the best music of the last five decades.  It is a privilege for IM Global to be in business with Clive and our friends at Scott Free."

The film will examine how Davis rocketed to the top of the bare-knuckles music industry, repeatedly building colossal record labels (Columbia, Arista, J), at times becoming the subject of great controversy while overcoming enormous professional and personal challenges and tragedies.  Davis has signed or played a key role in the careers of many of the most important music artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries.   These include: Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Santana, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, Simon & Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Billy Joel, Earth Wind & Fire, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Rod Stewart, Sean “Puffy” Combs, The Kinks, The Grateful Dead and The Eurythmics.    His annual Pre-Grammy Gala, which just turned 40,  is always the hottest ticket of the year, drawing the biggest stars across music, film, television, industry and politics as well as business leaders and glitterati from around the world.   The Gala will be prominently featured in the documentary.

A five-time Grammy winner, Davis has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is a recipient of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

WME Global and Craig Emanuel of Loeb & Loeb represented Davis on the deal.  Schulhof and General Counsel Deborah Zipser negotiated on behalf of IM Global.

“Dirt” – the latest film from Forrest Lucas and Ali Afshar’s ESX Entertainment, has found its leads in Golden Globe® and Emmy® nominee Kevin Dillon (HBO’s “Entourage,” ‘The Throaways”) and DeRon Horton (“Dirty Grandpa’).

Starring alongside Dillon and Horton are Christina Moore (“Running Wild”, “Searching For Fortune”), Matthew Glave (“Argo,” Bravo’s “Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce”), Dominic Devore (“Channeling”), Blake Heron (“11:14”), YouTube sensation Lexy Panterra and Devon Long.

Directed by Alex Ranarivelo (“Running Wild,” “American Wrestler,” “Born to Race” film series) from a script by Brian Rudnick and John Ducey, “Dirt” follows the story of 17-year-old Dez Truss (Horton) who is caught boosting cars for an auto-theft ring and is given one last chance to set his life straight by a compassionate mentor Captain Freeman. Freeman introduces Dez to former professional racecar driver- turned team owner Rick Radden (Dillon), who agrees to house and supervise Dez for the summer in exchange for manual labor. To avoid jail time and keep his 12- year-old sister out of the foster system, Dez begins working for Team Radden - Rick’s professional but underperforming Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series dirt racing team. Using the driving and engineering skills he learned under pressure while stealing cars, Dez becomes a vital member of the team, but not before his past threatens the safety of Rick's family and livelihood.

“Dirt” is financed and produced by Forrest Lucas of ESX Entertainment with Ali Afshar serving as producer. Co-Producers are Christina Moore and Daniel Carrey.

Said Afshar, “This story is tailor made for Kevin and DeRon, playing to their strengths as strong, versatile, leading actors capable of creating and showcasing a bond that fuels the film.”

Forrest Lucas adds, “We’re continuing to produce films that have a powerful message that will not only entertain but also inspire audiences. We have been fortunate to have an incredibly talented cast attached to this film and know this story will resonate with people.”

The film is the fifth collaboration between Afshar and Lucas’s ESX Entertainment and director Alex Ranarivelo. They  most recently teamed on the drama “Praying For Rain” starring Jane Seymour, which is currently in post-production.

Principal photography for “Dirt” will commence this month.

Dillon is represented by Gersh and Horton is represented by ICM Partners.

About ESX Entertainment

ESX Entertainment is a multifaceted entertainment company that develops, packages, finances and produces high-end, star-driven commercial projects telling inspiring and purpose driven stories.

The company was founded by Ali Afshar, the record-setting professional racecar driver, turned actor, turned movie producer (and now all three at once). Along with Afshar, it is run by Forrest Lucas, founder and owner of Lucas Oil Products, Inc., MAVTV, Lucas Cattle Company, and the naming rights to the Indianapolis Colts' Stadium, “Lucas Oil Stadium”, and Protect the Harvest.

Under the stewardship of Afshar, ESX Entertainment develops/finances/produces anywhere from three to six projects a year across feature films and digital/television series. Budget ranges vary depending on the size and scope of the individual projects. Lucas and Afshar commit capital and resources to top filmmakers and showrunners, enabling them to make films and series that are competitive in the global marketplace.

In addition to “Dirt,” the company’s feature film slate includes the upcoming film “Running Wild” – a humanitarian drama starring Sharon Stone, Doran Brown and Tommy Flanagan; “The Dog Lover” - a social issue drama starring Lea Thompson, James Remar, Allison Paige and Jayson Blair and releasing July 8th; and “American Wrestler: The Wizard” – a heartfelt coming of age story of perseverance in the face of adversity, starring Jon Voight, William Fichtner, Gabriel Basso and Afshar. The film recently picked up a few accolades including Best Actor for George Kosturos and Honorary Director for Alex Ranarivelo at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

ESX Entertainment began as an automotive performance and racing team founded by Afshar. Under the ESX banner, Afshar raced for Subaru of America for over seven years. During this span, ESX became a 2-time NHRA National & World Champion Team, 18 time NHRA event champion, 2005 Rally America Champion (with Rocket Rally) and a world record holder.

After years of racing and also acting (Afshar’s film credits include “Three Kings,” “Godzilla” and “The Siege” while TV credits include “King of Queens” “JAG” and “NCIS” ), Afshar turned to producing movies and created his first full length feature titled “Born To Race” – a  teen action film in the vein of “Fast and Furious” meets “Friday Night Lights.” Afshar tapped into his rich auto racing history and brought dozens of sponsors to support him in this film including, Subaru of America, NHRA, Pep Boys, Injen and more. “Born to Race” surprised audiences and exceeded sales around the world thus, the second producing endeavor in Afshar’s auto based films titled “Born to Race: Fast Track” was green lit. Afshar has a larger role in this film and acted alongside a great group of young actors including Diogo Morgado and Beau Mirchoff

Naomi Watts and Daisy Ridley are in final negotiations to star in the highly-anticipated OPHELIA for Covert Media

Two-time Academy Award nominee Naomi Watts (DIVERGENT series, THE IMPOSSIBLE) and rising superstar Daisy Ridley (STAR WARS VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS) are in final negotiations to star in OPHELIA, the highly-anticipated and dynamic reimagining of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” focusing on the untold story of Ophelia’s (Ridley) tragic romance with the prince and her relationship with his mother Queen Gertrude (Watts), it was announced today by Covert Media’s CEO Paul Hanson.

To be directed by Claire McCarthy (THE WAITING CITY), OPHELIA is based on the award winning novel by Lisa Klein and adapted for the screen by the acclaimed and award-winning writer Semi Chellas (“MAD MEN,” “THE ELEVENTH HOUR”).

“OPHELIA is brimming with youth-fueled charisma, exploring the nature of true love and beauty, and I'm so excited to bring this fresh mythic spin to Hamlet from a female perspective,” commented Claire McCarthy.  “This retelling will be experienced through the eyes of Ophelia and has the kind of romance, complexity and suspense that makes this beloved story exciting to younger audiences,” she continued.

Independent feature production, financing, and distribution company Covert Media is financing the film that’s being produced by Daniel Bobker and Ehren Kruger (THE BROTHERS GRIMM) and Sarah Curtis (HYSTERIA). Covert is handling international rights to the film.  CAA, which packaged and arranged the financing, will represent the film’s U.S. rights.

Set in the 14th Century but spoken in a contemporary voice, OPHELIA is a pulse-pounding insight into a perilous world of murder and betrayal. Ophelia takes center stage as the Queen’s most trusted lady-in-waiting. Beautiful and intelligent, she soon captures the attention of the handsome Prince Hamlet and their forbidden love blossoms. As war brews, lust and betrayal are tearing Elsinore Castle apart and Ophelia must decide between her true love or her own life in order to protect a very dangerous secret.

“Sarah, Ehren & I have always treated this film like a jewel, since there's something extra precious in bringing to life a treasured female icon, celebrated for centuries as an alluring figure in the shadows of Shakespeare's most famous work, without ever really having her own story told,” said Producer Daniel Bobker. “Whether it's for the legions of fans of romantic tragic characters, or the millions of visitors who annually seek out the classic Millais painting of Ophelia at London's Tate Gallery, Ophelia holds a special place in the heart of the cultural canon---so we couldn't be more thrilled to have the talented female team of Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts, and Claire McCarthy set to make a film with our friends at Covert Media that'll finally shed light on a character who's fascinated so many for so long.”

Director Claire McCarthy’s award-winning feature film THE WAITING CITY starring Joel Edgerton and Radha Mitchell premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2010. In her most recent work, THE TURNING, an omnibus feature, Claire directed the centerpiece segment starring Rose Byrne, who won Best Actress at the Australian Academy Awards in 2015.

Paul Hanson said: “Claire is an exciting, new directing talent. In THE WAITING CITY she beautifully brought to life rich characters through strong performances in an exotic setting.  OPHELIA will tap into the same unique strengths to create a rich, thrilling and vital world inhabited by the incomparable Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts.”

Liz Kim Schwan continued: “Daisy Ridley’s fresh blend of strength and vulnerability is perfect for the title role of Ophelia. Coupled with Watt’s incredible and fearless talent, this acting combination will underpin a powerful and contemporary film that is sharp and accessible for a broad young audience.”

The project was brought to Covert Media by Vice President of Production and Development Elissa Friedman. The deal was negotiated by Covert’s Chet Devaskar, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs and Maren Olson for CAA with Jason Sloane and Mark Wetzstein of Sloane, Offer, Webber, and Dern alongside Michael Schenkman of Bloom, Hergott, Diemer, Rosenthal, Laviolette, Feldman, Schenkman & Goodman on behalf of the filmmakers.

Playing the title role of Ophelia, Daisy Ridley has become a global phenomenon after starring as Rey in JJ Abram’s STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS. With the film grossing over $1.87 billion worldwide and earning five Oscar-nominations, Ridley immediately became Hollywood’s newest it-girl. Ridley is currently filming the next installation of STAR WARS for director Rian Johnson. She’s also attached to star in Marielle Heller’s KOLMA with JJ Abrams producing for Paramount. She’s also attached to the drama THE LOST WIFE based on the book by Alyson Richman. Ridley is also an executive producer on the documentary THE EAGLE HUNSTRESS which premiered at Sundance this year and will be released by Sony Picture Classics.

Naomi Watts will next star in Destin Daniel Cretton's THE GLASS CASTLE opposite Brie Larson for Lionsgate, and will star in and executive produce the Netflix series GYPSY. She is currently starring in DEMOLITION with Jake Gyllenhaal. She has also shot The Weinstein Company’s ABOUT RAY with Susan Sarandon and Elle Fanning, Gus Van Sant's SEA OF TREEES with Matthew McConaughey, Colin Trevorrow’s THE BOOK OF HENRY and the psychological thriller SHUT IN. Her other recent films include Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu's Academy Award winning film BIRDMAN with Michael Keaton, Noah Baumbach’s WHILE WE WERE YOUNG with Ben Stiller and Amanda Seyfried and two of the installments in the DIVERGENT franchise based on the popular best-selling novels. Watts is known for her Oscar nominated performances in Iñarritu's 21 GRAMS with Sean Penn and in Juan Antonio Bayona’s THE IMPOSSIBLE, and her critical acclaimed performance in David Lynch's MULHOLLAND DRIVE.

Ridley is repped by CAA and by attorney Shelby Weiser at Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.

Naomi is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment, and by attorney Steve Warren of Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush and Kaller.
