CREDITORS by Ben Cura

UK, 2015 // DRAMA // 81min // COMPLETED // MARKET DEBUT

With: Christian McKay (Me and Orson Welles; Rush; Northern Soul; The Theory of Everything), Andrea Deck (Mr. Selfridge; The Devil’s Violinist; The Counsellor), Ben Cura (Comes a bright day; Threesome; Dream On), Tom Bateman (The Tunnel; Da Vinci’s Demons; Jekyll and Hyde), Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral; Poirot)

Based on August Strindberg's 1888 play, 'Creditors' is a beautifully shot modern re-telling of Strindberg's story of love, betrayal, revenge and psychological manipulation, which he considered to be his one true masterpiece.

At times disturbingly funny and cruelly bleak, 'Creditors' deals with the most private aspects of human relationships. From questioning our concepts of marriage and fidelity, to trying to establish the role of the modern woman in a world still trapping her within the confines of old fashioned canons, the film's story stirs, moves and sometimes even angrily rebuts our very own personal definitions of each.

BLOOD MOON by Kenneth Kokin

USA, 2015 // DRAMA // 72min // COMPLETED // MARKET DEBUT

Written by Oscar Nominated Nicholas Kazan

With: James Callis (Battlestar Galactica, Bridget Jones's Diary), Maya Kazan (The Knick, Boardwalk Empire), Frank Medrano (The Shawshank Redemption, The Usual Suspects, Sleepers)

It is a story of seduction, retribution, and innocence lost. When a young woman is raped, will she sacrifice her humanity and her innocence to enact revenge on her attacker? "Blood Moon" asks the question: when a man’s casual approach to sex turns ugly, how far will a woman go to avenge herself?

“Kenneth Kokin’s brilliant directorial debut ‘Blood Moon’ is an engaging and gripping tragedy that’s worthy of being seen. Kokin also produced and directed second unit on several award-winning films that include the ‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘Captain Abu Raed’,’The Way of the Gun’ and ‘Mortdecai’.

Haunting, yet stylistically beautiful, the story follows a young woman who is raped and how she executes retribution on her attacker. It explores the transition from a perky, pretty teen-ager to someone who is forever warped from abuse and degradation.’

A SAILOR'S TALE by Marcin Latallo

POLAND, 2015 // FANTASY COMEDY // 90min // POST-PRODUCTION // MARKET DEBUT

A young man dressed as a sailor arrives by train in the town of Łódź in Poland. To each person he meets he tells a different story: how he sailed the seas, climbed the Himalayas, tangoed in Argentina, studied gastronomy in France and practiced Kung Fu in China… Has he invented these stories to make up for his lost identity?

Just after telling the scary story of a child murderer in town, the police discover a dead girl in a barrel. The sailor finds himself suddenly obliged to prove that his stories are true to all those he encounters: he prepares a French dinner for a local family, stands up for a friend and wins a fight against bullies, dances the tango with a beautiful woman, climbs the highest chimney in Łódź, and last, but not least saves a little girl endangered by the mysterious serial killer.

Set in a poetic reality, it is the tale of a charming sailor who has forgotten his identity and is looking for a place to drop anchor even if far away from the sea.

THE DAYS RUN AWAY LIKE WILD HORSES OVER THE HILLS by Marcin Malarszczak

GERMANY-POLAND-USA, 2015 // EXPERIMENTAL // 73min // COMPLETED // MARKET PREMIERE

The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over The Hills is an intimate and raw film about women and female identity. Using both black-and-white and color, this feature, set in Berlin and its environs, and in a small town in Poland takes place in private homes and in public gardens; the worlds seem very tightly contained, even in the open outdoor spaces. The performances are so candid and raw that we are not always sure if this is a narrative or a documentary. Natalie – young, childlike, playful, lives in Berlin. During the day she works with children. At night she parties with her friends, discussing insecurities, hopes and fears. She lives in a dream-like world. She acts out her roles. Which is the real Natalie? Maria stays at home with her young child, Elise. Her contact with the outside world seems only via her balcony, or her own imagination. Elise is oddly adult both child and parent – profound and poetic, nurturing and encouraging. They care for each other. Latent, darker human instincts are played with and suppressed. Life and death mingle in the home. Stefania, an older woman, lives in Poland. She reminisces with others about forgotten people. They discuss disease, loss and death – the ghost of Tadek, whose body turned black when he ripped his infected bladder, and died. What is the connection between these women? Are they alternate realities of the same life? Are they converging memories of an entire lifetime? Under the winter sky, they wonder what they might become and what might have become of them. Time passes ever slower.

With tender intimacy, the film looks within the cosmos of the private for the moments in which the time in between becomes concentrated in the gaze of the horses running by. A touching illusion emerges, as if Marcin Malaszczak managed to capture the fleeting moments of life between its turning points on film.

THE REAPER by Zvonimir Juric

CROATIA-SLOVENIA, 2014 // DRAMA // 98min // COMPLETED

Unfolding over a summer night in a rural Croatian village, the new film from director Zvonimir Juric is a bold, humane, and morally challenging social drama.

The Reaper begins with Ivo (Ivo Gregurevic), a quiet labourer in the employ of an agro-industrial conglomerate, coming to the aid of a woman whose car has run out of petrol on a dark, deserted road. Though he first appears in the guise of a saviour, the truth is that Ivo is anything but a hero: he did time in prison for raping a woman many years ago. These days, he is quiet and withdrawn, struggling with his demons and with the ugly past that his fellow villagers refuse to let him forget.

Juric subtly orchestrates The Reaper's volatile narrative, maintaining a sense of danger that pervades the gloomy, austere atmosphere right up until the grim climax.

Three intertwined stories that unfold over a single night in an isolated Croatian village add up to grim but compelling viewing in “The Reaper,” a tense, nuanced drama from helmer Zvonimir Juric (“The Blacks”). Aided by a superb, seasoned cast and stellar camerawork from Branko Linta (a prizewinner at the Pula Film Festival), Juric captures the atmosphere of volatility and despair in a place where former deeds are not easily forgotten and the recent past is still a raw wound.

LETTER TO THE KING by Hisham Zaman

NORWAY-KUDISTAN, 2014 // DRAMA // 75min // COMPLETED

A group of refugees are on a bus bound for Oslo, visiting the capital city in a land promising new beginnings. But for five people, it’s a day to rectify their past and justify a new future. We follow them as they each explore their possibilities – a secret love, a new life, a white lie, fulfilling a dream and avenging the death of a husband.

Their stories are bound together by a letter to the King of Norway, written by eighty-two year old Mirza.

Having nabbed the Nordic film prize at the Gothenburg Film Festival for 2013′s “Before Snowfall,” Norwegian helmer Hisham Zaman pulled off the same honor for the second year in a row with his sophomore effort, “Letter to the King,” a poignant ensemble drama that crosscuts among various refugees and asylum seekers, each with their individual hopes and agendas, as they spend a day in Oslo.

Variety

The film’s only 75 minutes long, which means that each of the five interconnected storylines has less than 15 minutes to introduce the characters, develop their conflicts and bring their stories to a close. But Zaman does so beautifully, further confirming he’s a storyteller of significant economy and observational skill as well as talent.

With this low-budget but impressive film, which was released in Norway at the end of January, the writer-director managed to take win the top prize at Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival, the Dragon Award, for the second year in a row after last year’s win for his debut, Before Snowfall.

LITTLE CRUSHES by Aleksandra Gowin & Ireneusz Grzyb

POLAND, 2014 // COMEDY-DRAMA // 78min // COMPLETED

Little Crushes takes us into the lives of three young adults looking for solidarity, love and independence. Kasia and Asia share an apartment, a car and a job: clearing out the houses of the recently deceased and selling the treasures they find at a second-hand market. Peter works in a factory screwing lids onto jars, but ends up on the street. He is still struggling with his recent divorce and a mother who isn’t exactly the most stable person on earth.

When the girls ask him to help out with their ‘two-person business’, he needs no second bidding. He quickly falls for Asia, but this disrupts the balance of the brand-new friendship between the three; it turns out Kasia is also in love…

Mumblecore from Poland? This fresh-faced auteur film may not tick all the genre boxes, but it makes a lot of nods in that direction. The natural dialogues, dry humour and delicate singer-songwriter music from Polish band Enchanted Hunters make a comparable, natural impression.

Rotterdam Int. Film Festival

Through keen humour, this Polish indie debut portrays three grownups in search of love, friendship and independence. Aleksandra Gowin and Ireneusz Grzyb present this triangle drama in a style that is as natural as it is eccentric. Little Crushes is a film about the beauty in everyday simplicity.

CAVANNA, HE WAS CHARLIE
A documentary by Nina & Denis Robert
France - 2015 - French

François Cavanna was one of the two founders of Charlie Hebdo and Hara Kiri, well known as an irreverent protagonist of the satirical press and a renowned author. Aged 90, he was still writing for the now sadly world famous newspaper. He died just one year before the tragic attack of January 2015.
The films spans 2010 to 2015, featuring interviews of Cavanna, and those of Charlie Hebdo’s best satyrical journalists and illustrators such as Sine, Willem or Delfeil de Ton. With amazing and often hilarious archives, this documentary takes us through the history of  his work and what freedom of speech really means. This is the story of the first man who could say «I am Charlie»…

THE PIONEERS
THE STORY OF STREET DANCE
A film by Tessa Morgan
UK, USA- 2016 - Documentary - English
Pre-Production

An urban subculture, with its roots in the social dances of marginal communities in America. The Pioneers of Street Dance brought the energy and creativity of the inner city into the spotlight in the early 70s. Their performances, travels, and teachings have laud the foundations of an art form. Nos in their 50s and 60s their influence reaches accross the world. From The Bronx and South Central Los Angeles, to the slums of Manila and the favelas of Brazil.

With the vibrancy of the music and dances, ‘The Pioneers’ tells the story of a forgotten legacy, and how it influenced the music, fashion and ideologies of pop culture today.

The film is a Rhayuela Cine (Colombia), Sudestada Cine (Argentina) and Axxon Films (France) co-production

After three years, with ALIAS MARÍA Colombian films come back to the
Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival

José Luis Rugeles's ALIAS MARÍA, a feature film produced by Rhayuela Cine, after being the opening film for the 55th Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival (FICCI), will represent Colombia in the section "Un Certain Regard" in the 68th edition of the most important cinematographic event in the world. The Colombian film is one of 14 titles in this section announced last week. It marks the return of national films to the section since the participation of La Playa D.C. in 2012.

Un Certain Regard

Un Certain Regard is one of the programs in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. It was introduced in 1978 by Gilles Jacob and each year it showcases a series of films with different visions and styles that seek international recognition. With a separate jury, this section intends to recognize young talent and encourage innovative and bold works. Filmmakers of the stature of Wim Wenders and Kim Ki-duk have participates and won recently in this section.

This year, the Un Certain Regard's jury will be presided by the Italo-American actress and director Isabella Rossellini. ALIAS MARÍA will compete with movies from all around the world like Neeraj Ghaywan's MasaanHrútar (Rams) by Grímur Hákonarson, Kishibe No Tabi (Journey to the Shore) by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Laurent Larivière's Je Suis Un Soldat (I am a Soldier), Zvizdan (The High Sun) by Dalibor Matanic, The Other Side by Roberto Minervini, Un Etaj Mai Jos (One Floor Below) by Radu Muntean, Seung-Uk Oh's Mu-Roe-Han (The Shameless), Las Elegidas (The Chosen Ones) by David Pablos, Nahid by Ida Panahandeh, Comoara (The Treasure) by Corneliu Porumboiu, Chauthi Koot(The Fourth Direction) by Gurvinder Singh, Madonna by Suwon Shin and Maryland by Alice Winocour.

ALIAS MARÍA is the fourth Colombian movie to be selected in this section, after Cóndores no entierran todos los días (A Man of Principle) by Francisco Norden in 1984, Los viajes del viento(The Wind Journeys) by Ciro Guerra in 2009 y La Playa D.C. by Juan Andrés Arango in 2012.

Childhood in the mist of an atrocious and unnecessary war

ALIAS MARÍA
, the opening movie for the 55th Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival, invites the viewer to think about the absurdities of war and the difficulties of the Colombian armed conflict. This new movie by Rugeles, who comes back to the big screen after García (2010), tells the story of María, a thirteen-year-old guerilla fighter who witnesses the secret birth of the commander's child, while she tries to decide what to do with her own pregnancy. ALIAS MARÍA, as well as inviting, seducing, and welcoming all audiences, involves the audience in a conflict that is at the same time personal and social. It will, without a doubt, strike a chord and leave everyone watching breathless.

The shooting took place in the jungle of the Magdalena Medio, which gives a stronger sense of realism to the story written by Diego Vivanco. Rugeles presents five talented natural underage actors: Karen Torres, Anderson Gómez, Erik Ruiz, Neiver Agudelo and Deivis Sánchez. They were chosen between October 2013 and January 2014, when around 1800 children were interviewed in zones strongly affected by our armed conflict. 400 children were selected from these interviews to participate in theatrical workshops in order to identify those with special talent in acting. With them, there were theater actors that were directed by Rugeles with particular sensibility to achieve the moving interpretations. Among them was the young talent Carlos Clavijo from the Casa Ensamble School, the Argentinian Lola Lagos, who has a long theatrical journey, Fabio Velasco, who leads the Ingeniería Teatral movement, and the well known Julio Pachón and Carmenza González.

José Luis Rugeles directed the feature film ALIAS MARÍA. It was produced by Federico Durán and written by Diego Vivanco. Sergio Iván Castaño was the director of photography; Oscar Navarro was art director; Camilo Sanabria did the music, Rocío Caro Villamil the investigation; Daniela Castro was assistant director. And the Argentinians: Delfina Castagnino in edition, and Martín Grignaschi and Federico Billordo in sound design. It has the support of the Colombian Fund for the Development of Cinematography (Fondo para el Desarrollo Cinematográfico) –FDC, Ibermedia, The Global Film Initiative, INCAA, OIM, USAID and it has scheduled premieres in France, Belgium, Holland, Luxemburg, Argentina and Colombia, as well as a presale in FOX+ for Latin America.

More than a movie

ALIAS MARÍA is a transmedia project that goes beyond being a feature film: it's a multiplatform proposal made of a series of products and activities related to the theme of the story and happening in different parts of the country.

Among those activities, the audiovisual workshops in places with high rates of child recruitment and use stand out by transforming their vision of the world through cameras. The short films and materials resulting from these workshops are available online to multiply this experience. With these initiatives we seek to contribute to the strengthening of the prevention strategies against recruitment and use in the country.

Rhayuela and Galaxia 311 are also developing the documentary Nombre de Guerra: Alias Yineth. It depicts the country after the failed attempt at the peace process of Caguán though the story of Yineth. She was a former combatant who was recruited when she was 12 by the guerilla group FARC, in 1998, and who now works for the government in programs for the reintegration of former combatants.

At the same time we are setting up a collaborative webpage that contains not only the above-mentioned content, but also audiovisual materials and other expressions generated by the civil society. It would be articulated in a map with the recent history of violence in Colombia, which would allow us to examine ourselves, build our memory, and believe in the possibility of another future.

Rhayuela Cine

Rhayuela is an important Colombian production company with a future projection to the Latin American market, not only with movies and its own content, but also ads and music videos. ALIAS MARÍA is the first of Rhayuela's movies to be part of the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Other standout Rhayuela films are García (2010) and El Páramo (2011) by Jaime Osorio Márquez, and Días de Vinilo (2014) by Gabriel Nesci.

Some of the other awards collected by Rhayuela's productions are: Moviecity Award to best film, Cartagena 2011; Best Breakout Director, Sitges, Spain, 2011; Best Actress, Gramado, Brazil, 2011; Best Script, Guadalajara, Mexico, 2012; Colombian Academy Macondo Awards to the Best Actress, Editing, Costumes y Make-up, 2012.

ROMEO & JULIET

The timeless classic and eternally beloved story of pure and idealistic love.

Few works so completely capture a universal aspect of human experience the way Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" captures pure and idealistic love. Few works have lasted in time and been so beloved that they are refreshed with each generation. Look at popular music charts and references will abound. Look at school productions and the play will be there. Here now is the story expressed in stunning animation in an age sensitive portrayal aimed at pre and young teen audiences (8 to 16). We forget sometimes that Shakespeare's Juliet was thirteen years old and Romeo not much older.

"Romeo and Juliet" fills any family oriented line-up and amply fills the role of beloved classic.

ENTRY LEVEL to be directed by Franck Khalfoun

Veteran Hollywood producers Craig Perry and Sheila Taylor (FINAL DESTINATION series, AMERICAN PIE franchise) of Practical Pictures announced today that their next production is the action/thriller ENTRY LEVEL directed by Franck Khalfoun.

Perry and Taylor will produce alongside Tom Butterfield (upcoming WELCOME TO ME, LIFE AT THESE SPEEDS). The Producers are currently casting the project, which is set to start shooting in the Fall.

Written by Benjamin Hurley, the feature film will be directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Franck Khalfoun.  He recently completed the upcoming AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, which is set for wide release by The Weinstein Company later this year.

Additional credits include MANIAC starring Elijah Wood, which premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and was released by IFC Films; and Summit Entertainment’s P2 starring Wes Bentley and Rachel Nichols.

Tannaz Anisi’s 13 Films is handling international sales on the action/thriller and will present the project to buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market. Paradigm is handling North American rights.

After he mysteriously awakens in a super high-security office building, a young man is forced by a mysterious stranger to complete a strictly timed series of dangerous tasks that will implicate him in a deadly crime with global consequences.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be working with a director of Franck’s caliber to bring this terrific thriller to the big screen,” said Perry.  Added Taylor, “We are overjoyed to join forces with Franck – his talents are an ideal match for this thinking man’s actioner.”

“ENTRY LEVEL is a suspenseful thriller with exhilarating action revolving around global espionage and the battle for secrets which are ultimately responsible for either maintaining global stability or total global destruction. It’s this thrilling combination of intense action and high-stakes plausibility which attracted me to the project, along with the opportunity to work with both Craig Perry and Sheila Taylor who are just as excited to take Benjamin Hurley’s dynamic script to the next level,” said Khalfoun.

“I am thrilled to be partnering with Craig and Sheila, who have a proven track record with the blockbuster AMERICAN PIE and FINAL DESTINATION franchises. Franck is a vibrant filmmaker with a singular vision for this tense, heart-pounding script which promises to be a non-stop ride for audiences worldwide. I am delighted to be aboard,” said Anisi.

Perry and Taylor founded feature film and television production company Practical Pictures in 2004, after working together at Perry’s previous label Zide/Perry Entertainment.  Under both banners, they produced the successful FINAL DESTINATION horror franchise as well as Universal’s global box office hit AMERICAN PIE comedy franchise.  Other productions include TriStar Pictures’ THE BIG HIT with Mark Wahlberg; and Warner Bros.’ CATS & DOGS.

They are currently in post-production on the family comedy ODDBALL, directed by Stuart McDonald and starring Shane Jacobson and Sarah Snook.  Upcoming projects include an UNTITLED THRILLER for Universal, scheduled to start shooting in the Fall; the Brazil-set action film 72 HOURS for Myriad Pictures; the crime thriller HUSTLE for Cascade Films; and the independent comedy WHITEFISH.

13 Films’ slate at Cannes also includes the comedy CHRONICALLY METROPOLITAN starring Chris Noth (HBO’s “Sex and the City”), Mary-Louise Parker (Showtime’s “Weeds”), Shiloh Fernandez (EVIL DEAD) and Ashley Benson (“Pretty Little Liars”), the supernatural thriller VOICE FROM THE STONE starring Emilia Clarke (HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” upcoming TERMINATOR GENISYS) and Marton Csokas (THE EQUALIZER) and crime thriller MANHATTAN NOCTURNE starring Oscar winner Adrien Brody, all three of which are in post-production with 13 Films debuting new footage in Cannes.

Additional films on the company’s slate include UNTÖT, set to star Hayden Christensen and actioner EXTORTION with Golden Globe winner Ving Rhames (upcoming MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION; PULP FICTION) and Oscar nominee Barkhad Abdi (CAPTAIN PHILLIPS), both in pre-production.
