The animation styles and techniques used for each segment vary with the graphic styles as we use textures, rendering techniques, colorization, and mixtures of 2D and 3D backgrounds with 3D animation to uniquely express the psychological adventures of Poe’s characters as they twist and turn in the darkest crevices of his tortured imagination.

OFFICIAL SELECTION - UN CERTAIN REGARD

THE OTHER SIDE

by Roberto Minervini

In an invisible territory at the margins of society, at the border between anarchy and illegality, lives a wounded community that is trying to respond to a threat: of being forgotten by political institutions and having their rights as citizens trampled. Disarmed veterans, taciturn adolescents, drug addicts trying to escape addiction through love, ex-special forces soldiers still at war with the world, floundering young women and future mothers, and old people who have not lost their desire to live. Through this hidden pocket of humanity, the door opens to the abyss of today’s America.

DIRECTORS' FORTNIGHT

BEYOND MY GRANDFATHER ALLENDE by Marcia Tambutti Allende

35 years after the coup d’état that overthrew her grandfather, Salvador Allende, Marcia wishes to change the family custom of not speaking about him and their tragic history. She believes it is time to recover the family memories snatched away during the coup and to unveil their intimate past buried under Allende´s political transcendence, exile and family pain. She draws a family portrait that addresses the complexities of irreparable losses and the role of memory in three generations of an iconic family. The translucent intimacy brings the viewer so close that we all become grandchildren of Allende.

“Our problems are all our assets.”

Understanding this promising paradox helped us not to lose hope, and to be able to go on since we believe wherever in the world that we live, we are going to face problems, big or small. But it is our duty not to be defeated and to think of solutions.

The reality of being alive and the dream of keeping cinema alive motivated us to go through the existing limitations in Iranian cinema.

The existing possibilities in cinema have convinced us that a filmmaker has only himself to blame if he is unable to make films. The discerning nature of art not only paves the way for the artist to overcome problems, but in the process of creativity, it turns every limitation into a subject for work.

The  unpleasant reality governing Iranian cinema and filmmakers today drove us to not overlook this (perhaps transient) reality and to depict parts of it that were reflected in us.

The Little Film Company announces today the acquisition HAMLET directed by Margaret Williams

The Little Film Company announces today the acquisition for worldwide sales the newly filmed version of Shakespeare’s most iconic play HAMLET, starring Maxine Peake (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING), directed by Margaret Williams (WRITTEN ON SKIN, Royal Opera House/BBC – winner of five awards including the Gramophone Contemporary Award and the Diapason d’Or).  Sarah Frankcom, award-winning Artistic Director of the Royal Exchange Theatre (MASQUE OF ANARCHY, PUNK ROCK, A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE), directed the stage production.

Following the highly successful theatrical run at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, Picturehouse Entertainment opened HAMLET across the UK on 23 March in over 300 cinemas to stunning reviews, noting the strong and intense performances and the fresh take on the popular classic.

The strong, poignant production depicts intense family drama and the power of grief. Maxine Peake’s fierce and textured Hamlet imbues the role with anger, indignation and purpose.  Filmed with eight cameras by an expert team, the film captures the intensity of the stage production with all the polish and care of a feature film.

HAMLET also stars John Shrapnel as Claudius/Ghost (PHEDRE, with Helen Mirren at the National Theatre; MACBETH, with Kenneth Branagh, 2016), Barbara Marten as Gertrude (THE MILL, VERA), Gillian Bevan as Polonia (LONDON ROAD, TEACHERS), Katie West as Ophelia (WITHOUT YOU, and the Royal Exchange production PUNK ROCK), and Thomas Arnold as Horatio (CALL THE MIDWIFE, WOLF HALL and ENDEAVOUR).  The film is executive produced for Genesius Pictures by Julian Gleek, Quidem Productions LTD by Ralph Bernard and Simon Cooper, Royal Exchange Theatre by Fiona Gasper, and produced by Anne Beresford and Debbie Gray (NORTHERN SOUL, Winner - NME 2015, Best Film).

HAMLET will screen in the Marché du Film on Monday, May 18, 5:30pm, Lerins 1.

“To bring such a daring, new take on this much-loved piece of work to the buyers in Cannes is a real pleasure. Maxine Peake is outstanding, the staging is wonderful and for this all to be translated onto the big screen is masterful,” states Robbie Little, co-president of The Little Film Company.

Debbie Gray had major success in 2014 with the BAFTA-nominated film NORTHERN SOUL, which reached number ten at the UK box office and number one in the DVD chart. The Little Film Company and Genesius Pictures are now working on The More You Ignore Me written by Jo Brand and to be directed by Keith English. Also Genesius Pictures and Quidem Productions are working closely together on further productions with the Little Film Company to be announced shortly .

With offices in London and Los Angeles, The Little Film Company, is a worldwide film sales and marketing company that also theatrical distributes, finances and executive produces independent motion pictures and consults for diverse media companies.

The 13th Step is an explosive new documentary film by Monica Richardson that exposes the criminal and sexually predatory behavior that occurs systematically within Alcoholics Anonymous.

Despite repeated warnings from respected board members and longtime members, this behavior goes unchecked by Alcoholic Anonymous' world headquarters. It is exacerbated by the sentencing of criminals and sex offenders to AA meetings without the knowledge of other AA members.

From our Federal courts, all the way down to our children's cartoons, Alcoholics Anonymous has permeated our livves and filled us with supposed knowledge about alcohol abuse, rehab and recovery for over 60 years.

But what exactly is AA? What goes on within those meetings where alcoholics congrgate and DUI offenders are forced to go as part of their criminal sentences?

Join us as we tackle society's deep-rooted relationship with AA and discover exactly what goes on behind the veil of anonymity

CICAE Jury at the Directors’ Fortnight: the partnership with the Directors’ Fortnight has been confirmed!

The CICAE jury, formed by three exhibitors of the network, will grant the CICAE Art Cinema Award to the best feature film of the 2015 selection. The aim of this prize is to discover those films considered relevant for their quality and for their big potential to reach a big audience and share the discovery with all the members of the network. So, this Directors’ Fortnight will unfold in the shadow of women. Not only because Philippe Garrel’s wonderful film, which bears that title, will be our opening film, but also because this year in particular, there will be a multitude of feminine protagonists in the lineup of features and short films from around the world. Importantly, there will be three first films by young female directors Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Chloé Zhao and Marcia Tambutti. These first films, Mustang, Beyond My Grandfather Allende and Songs My Brother Taught Me, were obvious choices for us because of their highly charged Romanesque nature, their sensitivity and scope. Many female characters have also stirred filmmakers and lighted up films both by women and their male counterparts - Philippe Garrel (In the Shadow of Women), Arnaud Desplechin (My Golden Days), Philippe Faucon (Fatima), Nabil Ayouch (Much Loved), Jaco Van Dormael (The Brand New Testament) and Sharunas Bartas (Peace to Us in Our Dreams). Directors’ Fortnight 2015 -

Édouard Waintrop’s Editorial

All the CICAE meetings // And yet, you don’t put together a selection like ours based on a single principle. What moved us about these films was, above all, the emotion they radiate, the passion that informs them, and sometimes the way they surprised us. We were enthused by the fireworks set off by Miguel Gomes in his Arabian Nights to evoke the suffering of the Portuguese people, subjected to an unjust austerity programme. The very young Magnus von Horn surprised us with his terribly dramatic first film Efterskalv. We were also surprised by the way that the young Jeremy Saulnier managed to multiply the strands and captivate us with Green Room. Fernando León de Aranoa enchanted us with A Perfect Day (an ironic title), by hisdeft intertwining of personal destinies and that of a nation exhausted by a decimating war. Thomas Bidegain grabbed hold of an uncommonly wide-ranging narrative to tell a very contemporary story. Rick Famuyiwa’s images collided with the clichés of American movies in a hip, funky, geeky comedy. Takashi Miike took us on a wild ride, a free for all brawl of everyone against everyone, including yakuzas and vampires. And finally, Ciro Guerra navigated us down the mysterious Amazon as seen through the eyes of a mesmerising shaman.

This is what makes cinema great!!!

The CICAE International jury in Cannes will be formed by: Francesca Bolognesi, Académie de France à Rome - Villa Medici (Rome, Italy) Matthias Damm, Casablanca Filmkunsttheater (Nuernberg, Germany) Myriam Djebour Roumier, Cinéma Les Carmes (Orléans, France)

ROBIN FRIDAY starring Sam Claflin

$

Sam Claflin (THE HUNGER GAMES franchise, THE RIOT CLUB, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES) is set to star in the soccer legend biopic ROBIN FRIDAY, to be directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Henry-Alex Rubin (MURDERBALL, DISCONNECT), it was announced today by producers Mike Young, Julian Stone and Paolo Hewitt of RF Movie Productions Ltd. Financing partners include Global Film Partners’ Daniel Koefoed and Guirec van Slingelandt, Telegael’s Paul Cummings and 9Magnan’s Meghana Gupta.

Fortitude International, co-founded by Nadine de Barros, Robert Ogden Barnum and Daniel Wagner, will handle foreign rights and will present the project to buyers at the Cannes Film Market. De Barros will be supported by her sales team including Katie Irwin, VP of International and Samantha Peel, Director of International Sales and Marketing.

CAA, which packaged and arranged financing for ROBIN FRIDAY, will represent the film’s North American rights.

Based on the biography The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw: The Robin Friday Story, co-written by acclaimed music and sports author Paolo Hewitt, the screenplay was written by Stone and Hewitt.

Scheduled for a fall shoot in the UK, the feature film was developed with funding and support from Film Cymru Wales.  Additional casting is underway to bring an authentic soccer presence to Robin Friday’s world including casting real life professional soccer players.

Claflin will play the lead role of Robin Friday, the controversial and wild English soccer legend who played for Reading and Cardiff, Wales in the 1970s and died tragically at the young age of thirty eight. Friday’s short-lived, but brilliant talent continues to be remembered by his fans, and in 2004 he was voted “all time cult hero” in a BBC poll. He was just as well known for his hedonistic lifestyle off the field and was named #1 in a Channel 4 list of soccer “Bad Boys.”

“This will not just be a film about cheering a goal, but about tears and laughs and music and silence and anger and love…because this working-class hero with outrageous talent lived it all. It was a time before the age of privileged athletes, a time when the fans lived next door to their heroes. As Robin Friday walked down the streets of the 70’s, everybody wanted to be him. But quite frankly, no one else had the balls…” said Stone.

“Robin Friday’s legacy continues to live on today and is a story tailor-made for the big screen given the larger-than-life energy which Friday brought to the sport and his life. The talented

Sam Claflin is the perfect actor to fill the shoes of this British legend due to his background in the sport prior to pursuing his acting career,” said de Barros.

Sam Claflin will next be seen in the final installment of Lionsgate’s global box office phenomenon, THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, coming to theatres worldwide in November 2015. Claflin’s film credits also include Disney’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES with Johnny Depp, Lone Scherfig’s recently released THE RIOT CLUB, and LOVE, ROSIE.  He is currently shooting ME BEFORE YOU with Emilia Clarke and Janet McTeer for New Line, then will next film THEIR FINEST HOUR AND A HALF, which re-teams him with Scherfig, and SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, opposite Kristen Stewart.

Henry-Alex Rubin previously directed DISCONNECT starring Jason Bateman, Alexander Skarsgård, Paula Patton and Andrea Riseborough, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Festivals, and was released in the US in 2012.  He directed the documentary MURDERBALL, which was nominated for an Oscar and won the Audience Award at Sundance.  Rubin is one of the top five most award-winning commercials directors in the world, with campaigns for brands such as Adidas, Gatorade, Volvo, VW, Samsung, Coke, Microsoft, and Google.

Mike Young is a successful award-winning animation producer who is well known for his children’s book series SuperTed which he adapted into a UK animated series which ran from 1983-1985 and won a BAFTA Award. The series was adapted in the US by Hanna Barbera which produced "The Further Adventures of SuperTed.” His other credits include “Hero 108,” “Chloe’s Closet,” “Dive Olly Dive,” and “Pet Alien” in addition to producing “Zevo-3” for Skechers Entertainment, “Strawberry Shortcake” for American Greetings and “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” “Clifford’s Puppy Days” and “Clifford’s Big Movie” for Warner Bros. Currently Young is in production on the feature animated film NORM OF THE NORTH with the voices of Rob Schneider, Heather Graham, Ken Jeong and Bill Nighy which will be released by Lionsgate in January 2016.

Paolo Hewitt started his writing career in the music press in 1980, working as a staff member for Melody Maker and NME. In 1990, he went freelance and has since authored twenty books, his subjects including The Beatles, David Bowie and Oasis. He has also written three football books, including The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw: The Robin Friday Story. He recently published two autobiographical works that detailed his childhood in care, whilst his novel The Mumper was turned into a film starring the late Bob Hoskins.

As a Producer, Julian Stone was instrumental in setting up the multi award-winning Young Adult Unwind series of books by Neal Shusterman at Constantin Film, and is developing Bruiser (also by Shusterman) and the historical drama SAVAGE, based on the book Savage: The Life and Times of Jemmy Button. His screenplays include BANG, BANG!, THE DIVE IN and THE CAT HUNT (co-writer). As an actor, he has appeared on the stage in London, Edinburgh, New York and Los Angeles. His more recent work includes Harry in Tracy Letts’ stage play Man from Nebraska, directed by William Friedkin. He has worked extensively in television and film, guest-starring and recurring on many popular TV shows, and has contributed a variety of voices to some of the world’s most popular video games.

Global Film Partners is an Amsterdam-based finance company that invests in international productions run by Managing Partners Daniel Koefoed and Guirec van Slingelandt. Previous investments of its group include KIDNAPPING MR. HEINEKEN, BOYCHOIR and BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA.

Established in 1988, Telegael is a multi-Emmy and IFTA award-winning studio engaged in film, television and animation production. Based in Galway, Telegael partners with international studios, distributors and broadcasters to develop, co-finance and co-produce animation and live-action content for the global market.

9Magnum, represented by Meghana Gupte, is a production finance entity based in Pune, India with equity, bridge and senior debt capabilities at its disposal to finance international film projects. It looks to produce strong, commercial and director-driven material, to which Meghana brings her experience in the film and animation industry in the US.
