The Little Film Company announces today the acquisition for worldwide sales the newly filmed version of Shakespeare’s most iconic play HAMLET, starring Maxine Peake (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING), directed by Margaret Williams (WRITTEN ON SKIN, Royal Opera House/BBC – winner of five awards including the Gramophone Contemporary Award and the Diapason d’Or). Sarah Frankcom, award-winning Artistic Director of the Royal Exchange Theatre (MASQUE OF ANARCHY, PUNK ROCK, A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE), directed the stage production.
Following the highly successful theatrical run at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester, Picturehouse Entertainment opened HAMLET across the UK on 23 March in over 300 cinemas to stunning reviews, noting the strong and intense performances and the fresh take on the popular classic.
The strong, poignant production depicts intense family drama and the power of grief. Maxine Peake’s fierce and textured Hamlet imbues the role with anger, indignation and purpose. Filmed with eight cameras by an expert team, the film captures the intensity of the stage production with all the polish and care of a feature film.
HAMLET also stars John Shrapnel as Claudius/Ghost (PHEDRE, with Helen Mirren at the National Theatre; MACBETH, with Kenneth Branagh, 2016), Barbara Marten as Gertrude (THE MILL, VERA), Gillian Bevan as Polonia (LONDON ROAD, TEACHERS), Katie West as Ophelia (WITHOUT YOU, and the Royal Exchange production PUNK ROCK), and Thomas Arnold as Horatio (CALL THE MIDWIFE, WOLF HALL and ENDEAVOUR). The film is executive produced for Genesius Pictures by Julian Gleek, Quidem Productions LTD by Ralph Bernard and Simon Cooper, Royal Exchange Theatre by Fiona Gasper, and produced by Anne Beresford and Debbie Gray (NORTHERN SOUL, Winner - NME 2015, Best Film).
HAMLET will screen in the Marché du Film on Monday, May 18, 5:30pm, Lerins 1.
“To bring such a daring, new take on this much-loved piece of work to the buyers in Cannes is a real pleasure. Maxine Peake is outstanding, the staging is wonderful and for this all to be translated onto the big screen is masterful,” states Robbie Little, co-president of The Little Film Company.
Debbie Gray had major success in 2014 with the BAFTA-nominated film NORTHERN SOUL, which reached number ten at the UK box office and number one in the DVD chart. The Little Film Company and Genesius Pictures are now working on The More You Ignore Me written by Jo Brand and to be directed by Keith English. Also Genesius Pictures and Quidem Productions are working closely together on further productions with the Little Film Company to be announced shortly .
With offices in London and Los Angeles, The Little Film Company, is a worldwide film sales and marketing company that also theatrical distributes, finances and executive produces independent motion pictures and consults for diverse media companies.

CICAE Jury at the Directors’ Fortnight: the partnership with the Directors’ Fortnight has been confirmed!
The CICAE jury, formed by three exhibitors of the network, will grant the CICAE Art Cinema Award to the best feature film of the 2015 selection. The aim of this prize is to discover those films considered relevant for their quality and for their big potential to reach a big audience and share the discovery with all the members of the network. So, this Directors’ Fortnight will unfold in the shadow of women. Not only because Philippe Garrel’s wonderful film, which bears that title, will be our opening film, but also because this year in particular, there will be a multitude of feminine protagonists in the lineup of features and short films from around the world. Importantly, there will be three first films by young female directors Deniz Gamze Ergüven, Chloé Zhao and Marcia Tambutti. These first films, Mustang, Beyond My Grandfather Allende and Songs My Brother Taught Me, were obvious choices for us because of their highly charged Romanesque nature, their sensitivity and scope. Many female characters have also stirred filmmakers and lighted up films both by women and their male counterparts - Philippe Garrel (In the Shadow of Women), Arnaud Desplechin (My Golden Days), Philippe Faucon (Fatima), Nabil Ayouch (Much Loved), Jaco Van Dormael (The Brand New Testament) and Sharunas Bartas (Peace to Us in Our Dreams). Directors’ Fortnight 2015 -
Édouard Waintrop’s Editorial
All the CICAE meetings // And yet, you don’t put together a selection like ours based on a single principle. What moved us about these films was, above all, the emotion they radiate, the passion that informs them, and sometimes the way they surprised us. We were enthused by the fireworks set off by Miguel Gomes in his Arabian Nights to evoke the suffering of the Portuguese people, subjected to an unjust austerity programme. The very young Magnus von Horn surprised us with his terribly dramatic first film Efterskalv. We were also surprised by the way that the young Jeremy Saulnier managed to multiply the strands and captivate us with Green Room. Fernando León de Aranoa enchanted us with A Perfect Day (an ironic title), by hisdeft intertwining of personal destinies and that of a nation exhausted by a decimating war. Thomas Bidegain grabbed hold of an uncommonly wide-ranging narrative to tell a very contemporary story. Rick Famuyiwa’s images collided with the clichés of American movies in a hip, funky, geeky comedy. Takashi Miike took us on a wild ride, a free for all brawl of everyone against everyone, including yakuzas and vampires. And finally, Ciro Guerra navigated us down the mysterious Amazon as seen through the eyes of a mesmerising shaman.
This is what makes cinema great!!!

Sam Claflin (THE HUNGER GAMES franchise, THE RIOT CLUB, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES) is set to star in the soccer legend biopic ROBIN FRIDAY, to be directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Henry-Alex Rubin (MURDERBALL, DISCONNECT), it was announced today by producers Mike Young, Julian Stone and Paolo Hewitt of RF Movie Productions Ltd. Financing partners include Global Film Partners’ Daniel Koefoed and Guirec van Slingelandt, Telegael’s Paul Cummings and 9Magnan’s Meghana Gupta.
Fortitude International, co-founded by Nadine de Barros, Robert Ogden Barnum and Daniel Wagner, will handle foreign rights and will present the project to buyers at the Cannes Film Market. De Barros will be supported by her sales team including Katie Irwin, VP of International and Samantha Peel, Director of International Sales and Marketing.
CAA, which packaged and arranged financing for ROBIN FRIDAY, will represent the film’s North American rights.
Based on the biography The Greatest Footballer You Never Saw: The Robin Friday Story, co-written by acclaimed music and sports author Paolo Hewitt, the screenplay was written by Stone and Hewitt.
Scheduled for a fall shoot in the UK, the feature film was developed with funding and support from Film Cymru Wales. Additional casting is underway to bring an authentic soccer presence to Robin Friday’s world including casting real life professional soccer players.
Claflin will play the lead role of Robin Friday, the controversial and wild English soccer legend who played for Reading and Cardiff, Wales in the 1970s and died tragically at the young age of thirty eight. Friday’s short-lived, but brilliant talent continues to be remembered by his fans, and in 2004 he was voted “all time cult hero” in a BBC poll. He was just as well known for his hedonistic lifestyle off the field and was named #1 in a Channel 4 list of soccer “Bad Boys.”
“This will not just be a film about cheering a goal, but about tears and laughs and music and silence and anger and love…because this working-class hero with outrageous talent lived it all. It was a time before the age of privileged athletes, a time when the fans lived next door to their heroes. As Robin Friday walked down the streets of the 70’s, everybody wanted to be him. But quite frankly, no one else had the balls…” said Stone.
“Robin Friday’s legacy continues to live on today and is a story tailor-made for the big screen given the larger-than-life energy which Friday brought to the sport and his life. The talented
Sam Claflin is the perfect actor to fill the shoes of this British legend due to his background in the sport prior to pursuing his acting career,” said de Barros.
Sam Claflin will next be seen in the final installment of Lionsgate’s global box office phenomenon, THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2, co-starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, coming to theatres worldwide in November 2015.
